MEXICO CITY — Mexico's Congress approved a bill Friday decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana, ecstasy, cocaine and heroin for personal use — a measure sure to raise questions in Washington about Mexico's commitment to the war on drugs.

The only remaining step was the signature of President Vicente Fox, whose office indicated he would sign it.

Supporters said the law would let police focus on drug smuggling, rather than on busting casual users. The bill also would stiffen many drug-related penalties: for trafficking, for possession near schools, and for possession of even small quantities by government employees.

Criminal penalties for drug sales would remain on the books.

"We can't close our eyes to this reality," said Sen. Jorge Zermeno, of Fox's conservative National Action Party. "We cannot continue to fill our jails with people who have addictions."

The administration of U.S. President George W. Bush scrambled to come up with a response.

"We're still studying the legislation, but any effort to decriminalize illegal drugs would not be helpful," a U.S. diplomat said on condition of anonymity.

Any effort to decriminalize would be... well, it's a bushite droid making the statement so fill in the blank with dread and terror about how civilization would fall if we didn't jail the hell out of everyone we can for pot or anything else. jerks!

like that one bust of crappy weed that the cops wouldn't let the reporters in to photograph because the smell would overcome them. and we are supposed to respect the law??

fortunately I think we shall slowly overgrow the bastards who like to hurt other human beings for being in their own homes and minding their own businesses by very reasonably smoking and so forth. As there is No safty issue with cannabis because it cant hurt you (unless you try to inhale the whole pound all at once, something else your humble narrator has noo objection to, either lol) the only real reason the forces of lawyers and robotic cops is to get that easy pension locked in.

I got a sort of kind of maybe yeah sort of letter from Sen Harkin last time in which he left himself lots of back doors, but admitted that medical pot was sounding like an idea whose time had maybe come... but he is still a lying weasle and a sell out to the pharmaceutical giants. He is a drug warrior and a withered up lawyer in a high place when all is said and done. But, it is movement in the right direction however weak.

happy trails
